Is DDI a good metadata standard for scientific data?

The DISC-UK DataShare project has just announced a new briefing paper "The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) and Institutional Repositories"

DDI is a metadata standard developed by the data archival community to support preservation, management, access and dissemination of Social Science data. An extremely useful standard for institutional repositories (IRs) willing to add datasets to their holdings.

Nonetheless, some institutions with a wider range of disciplines will produce more than just Social Science data. This is the case in Oxford.  The question now is :

Can DDI be used for scientific data?
